$40 Trillion In Debt
The United States national debt passed $40 trillion on Wednesday, August 19, and at this point the federal government doesn’t show any sign of slowing down on the spending. This staggering milestone comes only five months after surpassing the $39 trillion mark; according to NPR, the current rate of spending outstrips revenue by almost $2 trillion a year. Heavy borrowing and high interest payments have steadily added to the count; the government is paying over a trillion a year to cover the interest on our debt alone (BBC, NPR). The current rate of spending is unsustainable, and the United States’ position is tenuous.
This news comes not long after the recent intervention by the United States to support the Japanese yen. In early August, the US Treasury and Bank of Japan worked together to sell dollars and buy yen in an attempt to curb volatility (NPR, AP). In a recent YouTube video, Reveille’s Chad Smith and Stephen Weitzel go into detail about why the US may have decided to step in, and why now. Watch now on our channel.
