Government Shutdown Interrupts Various Federal Services
In early October, the US government shut down due to partisan disagreements over the Affordable Care Act. So far twenty-two days have passed with no solution, making this the second-longest government shutdown in history. Thousands of federal workers have been furloughed and thousands more are being asked to work without pay.
As the shutdown continues, federal programs are beginning to struggle to find the funds they need to keep operating. The IRS has furloughed nearly half of its staff, though essential work is still reportedly being completed by remaining employees. Programs such as Social Security, Veteran Affairs, Medicare, and Medicaid remain operational, but have warned that their ability to complete certain services may be affected. (NPR)
Thus far, the shutdown does not seem to be negatively affecting the markets; the S&P 500 continues to climb ever higher. However, economists warn that a prolonged shutdown could put a dent in GDP. Additionally, inflation and jobs data has been halted until the shutdown ends, which could affect the Fed’s ability to adjust interest rates as the market has been expecting. (Yahoo Finance)

A Note From Managing Partner Stephen Weitzel
Washington has proven itself to be, once again, a dysfunctional town. The American people are caught in the middle of a legislative impasse, pawns in the game of those wrestling for power. Of course, law makers will not miss a single paycheck. Many other federal workers will, including the military and air traffic controllers. Let’s hope Congress can come to terms on funding the essential aspects of our government before we collectively pay a price for their recalcitrance and ineptitude.
In uncertain times such as this, we find comfort in our Rules Based Investment Discipline and its ability to help us make confident investment decisions in foggy environments. It has been faithful to us in the past, and we trust that it will continue to be going forward.
