Tech Stock Scare
DeepSeek Raises Concerns About U.S. AI Dominance
In early February, Chinese company DeepSeek released new AI technology that rattled the American stock market. DeepSeek’s AI is said to be more efficient than leading American-owned AI, and it can be produced at a fraction of the cost. The news caused an immediate reaction in the markets; the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ both suffered significant drops. Things eventually leveled out, but this example should give pause to American investors - are we putting too much faith in just a few stocks? For more on DeepSeek and what it could mean for the future of AI, tune in to our DeepSeek video on the Reveille YouTube channel.

A Message From Managing Partner Stephen Weitzel
My wife and I plan to take our three kids (ages 11, 9, & 7) to the Pacific Northwest this summer. Recently, we sat them down to share some of what we plan to see, and one of the areas I’m excited to visit is Mt. Saint Helens in the Cascade Mountain Range. Of course, my children have never heard of Mt. Saint Helens, so I told them there was a massive volcanic explosion that impacted not just the region, but ultimately the entire world. While we look back today knowing that Mt. Saint Helens erupted in May of 1980, prior to her eruption there were many warning signs: earthquakes, small plumes of gas and debris, and a bulging mountain side. The US Geological Survey pleaded with locals and visitors to vacate the area. Many listened, but of course others, to their ultimate peril, did not. Those who remained in the area despite those warnings likely experienced many bright, sun shiny days - until they didn’t. And then, it was too late. In some ways, today’s markets give me similar vibes. There are signs of bulging excess and occasional market tremors, the DeepSeek news being the most recent example. My fear is that many investors are too focused on the sunshine and dismissing the risk these tremors represent. For their sake, I hope this isn’t a proverbial active volcano.
