Gold Rush
Metals Reach Record High Prices
Should you be going for gold? Even with a significant pullback this week, gold has had a historic run-up in price over the past year, and at the end of January passed $5000 an ounce for the first time. Silver had also enjoyed a boost to over $100 an ounce, bringing gold and silver valuations to their highest since 1979 (CNN). Investors that have maintained diversified commodity exposure in their portfolio have likely benefitted from this rise.
This "gold rush" is an indicator of market uncertainty. Gold is often considered to be a “safe haven” for investors in times of uncertainty, and recent geopolitical tensions have many worried about market movements. Additionally, other standard safe haven assets have fallen by the wayside, further promoting growth in gold and silver. The US dollar, for example, has weakened over the last year due to lower interest rates (NYT).
But how long will gold’s rally last? Is now the time to turn to gold in your own portfolio, or is this week's volatility a sign that this historic run over? At Reveille, we use our Rules Based Investment Discipline to help block out the noise and ensure you’re making logical investment decisions, instead of acting based on the latest headline. A Note On Social Security From Managing Partner Joe Perdue
Beyond the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) recently announced for 2026, several significant shifts in Social Security regulations are set to impact both current retirees and high earners. For those working while receiving benefits, the earnings-test limits are rising, allowing you to earn up to $24,480 before benefits are withheld. High-income professionals should also prepare for a higher tax liability, as the maximum wage cap for Social Security payroll taxes is increasing from $176,100 to $184,500. On the benefit side, the maximum monthly payment for those retiring at age 70 will reach $5,251, reflecting the program's ongoing adjustments to inflation. Furthermore, the cost to earn a Social Security work credit is rising to $1,890, a change particularly relevant for part-time earners still building their eligibility. Understanding these nuances is essential for optimizing your retirement cash flow and tax strategy in the coming year.
